The Art and Science of Interior Design

As interior designers, we are creatively working to curate a space that evokes a specific concept or emotion. Designing a beautiful space is so much more than placing throw pillows and accessorizing, it is an intricate balance of creativity and mathematical proportion that produces a breathtaking space. Here is how our designers use principles of art and science as tools to guide them through the design process.
The Art
Within the design community, interior design is widely regarded as an artform. Like a painter, interior designers draw inspiration from outside sources, such as nature, people, and even pieces of written literature. Using this inspiration, they are able to create a space that beautifully represents the individuality of their client and accentuates the artistry of design itself. Often, our interior designers strive to construct a space that evokes a positive emotion. With this goal in mind, they choose colors, materials, and shapes that propel the design towards its full potential. This creative process is what makes each home beautifully original; this is the process that makes being an interior designer so fulfilling.
The Science
Although interior design is widely recognized as an artform, it is also based on principles of science. Color theory is a science that is employed on a regular basis for most designers. The psychology of how color affects our emotions and actions is a powerful tool that can either make or break the design of a space. Another science that occurs often in interior design is geometry. A good designer understands how certain angles, shapes, and proportions can lead the human eye. For example, our designers know how to manipulate angles in ways that create points of interest, or focal points, in every room. This can be used to highlight a particularly beautiful area and tie together the design of the entire space.
Complimentary Differences. Although art and science seem to differ in nearly every aspect of their existence, they are more closely related than one might think.
Both are the human attempts to understand and describe the world around us. With that common goal, but methods of different traditions, science and art are the world’s most complimentary duo. When used together these are the tools that open up endless possibilities of creation in interior design.
