Sundance Film Festival Feature

The Sundance Film Festival, founded by Robert Redford, is an iconic ode to the world of film and theater, attracting directors and artists from all over the world. Every January, Park City, Salt Lake City, and Sundance host over 45,000 visitors as people attend the largest independent film festival in the U.S. Our Park City Design Firm has put together a list of some of the hottest films, events, and restaurants to check out at this year’s festival.

The Sundance Film Festival showcases some of the most amazing films put out by American and International Independent Filmmakers. With artists and directors from so many diverse backgrounds, there are stories told that touch viewers from all over the world. This year’s film lineup includes a variety of stories such as the documentary “Us Kids”, which centers around the survivors of the 2018 Massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. “Palm Springs”, which is a movie with comedic potential, as Andy Samberg has a strange encounter at a wedding. Then with a reinvention of the American dream story, “Minari” follows a Korean father that moves his family to Arkansas in the 1980’s to start a farm. Keri Putnam, executive director of the Sundance Institute, remarked about this year’s festival, “We believe diverse stories from independent artists around the world open us up to new perspectives and possibilities — at a time when fresh thinking and dialogue is urgently needed.” Click here for a full list of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival lineup.

Along with the many showcased films throughout the festival, there are also an absorbent amount of events and exhibitions that you won’t want to miss. Many of these events can be exclusive, but some of our favorites include the New Frontier Exhibition which is open to the public. The New Frontier is a venue that plays host to multiple exhibits such as virtual reality experiences, interactive art projects, and the Persuasion Machine as seen pictured below. We also recommend looking into the special Q&A events with directors, concerts, and parties at some of the best venues in town. Southwest Airlines is presenting a Celebration of Music in Film concert on January 25th featuring artists such as Rufus Wainwright. It will be a fun and historic event looking back on music throughout the world of film.

Park City and Sundance are home to incredible restaurants and we’ve put together a list of some of the best in town. If you’re looking for some quicker, but delicious options during your stay check out some local favorites such as El Chubasco, Vessel Kitchen, and Five Seeds. For a more upscale, but still delicious dining experience we love the vibe and cuisine at Riverhorse on Main, Handle, and The Foundry Grill. You can’t go wrong with any of these restaurants and they will be the cherry on top of an amazing Sundance Film Festival experience.

Last year’s Sundance Films were quite the success, with many of them being purchased by Amazon, Netflix, and other streaming services. This has become a great way for the public to see these amazing films from the comfort of their own home. If you haven’t heard of them yet, be sure to see the comical yet touching “Brittany Runs A Marathon”, the heart wrenching “Honey Boy”, and the thrilling “Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil Vile”. These movies were praised by critics and left us leaving last year’s festival wanting more!

The 2020 Sundance Film Festival will be one for the books. From the beautiful atmosphere of Utah’s mountainous terrain to the artistry and diversity featured from all around the world, we can’t wait for the excitement of this year’s festival. Check out the Sundance Institute for a more elaborate list of events and movies being showcased.
