How To Pick the Perfect Area Rug to Anchor Your Room
Area rugs not only offer an artistic value to a room, but they also provide comfort and warmth to hard surfaced floors like wood, tile, and concrete. An area rug often plays a major role in bringing balance into a space, so the frame or size of a rug makes a big difference in creating a well defined seating area that is cozy and inviting, while visually interesting.
Size is one of the most important factors to consider when selecting a rug, and the sizing will depend on the room. Less is more in transitional places like entryways, hallways and small conversation areas. Whether you are looking to place an area rug in a transitional spot or a major conversation area, as a general rule, your rug should extend under the the entire coffee table and at least under the front legs of the sofa and/or chairs.
An area rug serves as a great focal point for your design, anchoring your room with its colors, patterns, and textures. Once you’ve decided on a color scheme for your room and selected a rug incorporates those colors, you can start to build your room and select furniture, fabrics and accessories that compliment your rug. You can also have fun and add interest by layering rugs, as pictured above, for added color and texture.
When selecting your rug, choose a shape that fits well with the surrounding room and furniture. For example, if you’re going for a cleaner look, stick with rectangular rugs. However, if you are putting a rug beneath a round table, go with a round rug that matches the line of the furniture. Sizing, shape, color and pattern really make a world of difference when selecting an area rug that completes the design of your room!
