Furniture Placement Guidelines
When decorating your home there are so many things to consider such as lifestyle, budget, and on top of it all you want to make sure it feels aesthetically pleasing. When trying to design the layout of a room there are a few tips that we as designers highly value!
The first step in design is to measure a room from wall to wall, taking note of the length and width. Once you have taken those measurements, draw a floorplan to scale on grid paper converting feet to inches at a 1:1 scale. You can also use little cut out pieces of the furniture to better see the design plan. This will help you to picture how different layouts will work and what the best option will be for you!
Next, decide on a focal point. Whether that be a work of art, fireplace, tv, chandelier, etc. it’s important to choose one thing to build your design and furniture around. As you build out the design layout and have chosen your focal point, start to add in the other furniture such as tables, cabinets, dressers, and ottomans. Leave at least 18 inches between coffee tables and sofas, and 30 inches between other furniture pieces to allow people to walk through. As you create more space in your room around the furniture there will be more conversation areas which are great for entertaining!
Finally, center your area rug around the main seating in the room just extending a few inches beyond the sofa and chairs. Another important element in your design layout is lighting, so be sure to include enough overhead lighting, floor lamps, and table lamps to evenly distribute at varying levels thus creating a well balanced room.
