Our Creative Direction for the Year Ahead

Our Design Directors Share the Perspectives Guiding A+T 2026

As we move into 2026, our attention is drawn to the elements that give a space its soul. Material takes on a more expressive role, art becomes a natural starting point, and creation feels freer and more intuitive. Through the perspectives guiding our studio, a shared sensibility emerges—one that values texture over perfection, thoughtful composition over rigid rules, and spaces that are led by instinct as much as intention.

2026: A year grounded in craft, guided by intuition, and rooted in how our clients truly live.

The New Year Through the Lens of Heather Humphrey, Principal, Alder and Tweed

A material you’ll never tire of:

Plaster. It has a natural way of warming a space while adding depth and softness to walls. I’m drawn to its imperfections and the rich yet understated texture it brings. Plaster creates an elegant canvas that allows art, furnishings, and light to capture the eye. Its beauty is subtle and timeless, a form of quiet luxury that enhances without competing.

A piece you’d design a room around:

Fine art has been an endless source of inspiration for me lately. A compelling piece can shape the entire feeling of a room, infusing it with personality, individuality and sophistication. I love curating a room around a beautiful work of art, setting the ambiance and aesthetic for everything that follows.

Describe your design philosophy in three words:

Unexpected, cozy, and personal. The most meaningful spaces offer an effortless sense of enchantment while still feeling deeply inviting and reflective of the people who live there.

What’s a design rule you want to break next year:

Symmetry. I’m captivated by the challenge of achieving balance through intentional asymmetry. There’s something fresh about spaces that feel thoughtfully off balance, where interest comes from composition and instinct rather than perfect alignment.

What influences, shifts, or emerging trends are you noticing as we move into 2026 that you're excited about:

I’m loving the continued embrace of color, especially color drenching and high gloss finishes in rich, saturated hues. Monochromatic spaces can feel incredibly chic and immersive, and it’s exciting to see interiors becoming more confident when it comes to experimenting with color.

A material you’ll never tire of:

Marble, especially Calacatta Viola, is a material I return to again and again. There’s a richness and depth to it that feels timeless yet expressive.

A color that feels like home:

Cognac. It's so warm, grounded, and endlessly versatile in so many spaces.

A piece you’d design a room around:

I love designing around a single piece of bold furniture. Recently, we created an entire rec room around a red lacquer game table a client fell in love with, letting that moment of joy drive the rest of the space.

A recent source of inspiration:

Lately, I’ve been inspired by time spent in Beverly Hills, visiting vibrant hospitality spaces that embrace saturated color and playful design elements without sacrificing sophistication.

Describe your design philosophy in three words:

Timeless, comfortable, and thoughtfully considered.

What excites you most about design in the year ahead:

Every project presents a fresh opportunity to explore a unique direction, one guided entirely by how a client lives and what truly resonates with them. As we move into 2026, I’m especially drawn to deeper, moodier palettes and color-drenched spaces, embracing richness and not being afraid to go dark.

Here’s to 2026 and designing inspiring interiors that are layered, intentional, and led by instinct.
